Sep 22 (Field Level Media) – The San Francisco Giants are down to two members of their Opening Day roster still active with the club after placing first baseman Bryce Eldridge and right fielder Jung Hoo Lee on the injured list Monday.
Eldridge landed on the seven-day concussion injured list after getting hurt in the team’s Los Angeles hotel on Friday, according to the team. He didn’t play in the series as the Dodgers swept three games.
His IL move is retroactive to Friday, leaving open the possibility he could return to action before the season ends this weekend, but manager Tony Vitello told reporters that Eldridge likely will be shut down for the rest of the campaign.
Lee was placed on the 10-day IL due to a groin contusion, so his season is over. He exited San Francisco’s 3-1 loss to the Dodgers on Sunday in the seventh inning, an inning after fouling a pitch off his groin.
Right-hander Landen Roupp and shortstop Christian Koss are the last players on the Giants’ active roster who were with the team when the season started, though neither was in the lineup on March 25 against the New York Yankees. Many of the other players from the season-opening roster were either part of the team’s sell-off at the trade deadline or are on the IL.
Eldridge, 21, has a .269 batting average, a .364 on-base percentage and a .461 slugging percentage with 17 homers and 57 RBIs in 107 games this year. He began his major league career with San Francisco in 2025, hitting .107 with no homers in 10 games.
Lee, 28, batting .276/.320/.404 with 10 home runs and 57 RBIs in 143 games this season. Through three years with the Giants, he has a .270/.322/.397 batting line with 20 homers and 120 RBIs over 330 games.
The Giants filled the two roster vacancies by activating infielder Marcelo Mayer from the injured list and promoting outfielder Bo Davidson from Triple-A Sacramento.
Mayer, 23, hasn’t played a major league game since late June due to left arm and right foot injuries. The Giants acquired him from the Boston Red Sox on Aug. 3 in exchange for left-hander Erik Miller, and Mayer played four games for Sacramento in mid-August before he was shut down again.
Davidson, 24, split the minor league season between Double-A Richmond and Sacramento, batting a combined .290/.361/.527 with 29 homers, 94 RBIs and 20 stolen bases in 125 games.
Both newcomers immediately joined San Francisco’s starting lineup Monday night against the visiting Minnesota Twins. Davidson, playing right field and batting third, hit a first-inning single in his initial major league at-bat. Mayer served as the designated hitter and was slotted into the cleanup spot.
Left-hander Philip Abner was for assignment to clear a spot for Davidson on the 40-man roster. Abner, 24, had no decisions and a 9.64 ERA in five appearances for the Giants this year before he was optioned to Sacramento on Sunday. He pitched for the Los Angeles Angels earlier this season.
